Tekko
April 7-10
The Iceberg Luffy Experience
I arrived early Thursday and was infused in the pre-convention events right away with exclusive Funimation footage, specifically for Tekko. A Great Joker Game Exclusive was shown, I couldn’t take my eyes of the screen. Little did I know that was nothing of what was to come.
Tekko Used Guidebook to keep its attendees informed of the ongoing events. This was great as it also let you plan out your schedule in advance so that you were not overwhelmed with the many events happening at one time.
My Friday was dedicated to sports. I had planned to go the sports. Interestingly enough Tekko had a great sports panel that I decided to check-out in which two of the most popular anime was discussed. Haikyuu and Kuruko’s Basketball. There were other brief sports synopsis presented as well, but these are the 2 that stood out in great detail. It reaffirmed that the 2 best sports anime of the last year was Haikyuu and Kuruko’s basketball. Sports hardly gets coverage, so I had to make sure that the sports anime was highlighted.
Saturday was an amazing day. This was the day where I had the pleasure of attending 2 great Q&A’s.
1. Chris Patton- You may know Chris Patton from his appearance on Guyver as Sho Fukamachi, Full Metal Alchemist Greed and Full Metal Panic’s Sousuke Sagara. He has voiced characters in more than 200 anime. That alone would tell anime fans that this Q&A was something great, monumental and life changing. In this panel. Chris Patton talked about some of his many anime roles as well as discussing the art of voice acting.
2. Back On- Their Q&A had everything from seriousness to humor. It was great being able to interact with them about the bands formation and other musical related questions. It is here that many people discovered that in Japan Cosplay and Anime conventions are held seperately in Japan. So you will not find many cosplayers at an anime convention. They gave a lot of encouragement to aspiring musicians and those that want to follow their dreams.
Back On Concert- There was no words to describe how great the show was. It was a major highlight of the Tekko 2016 experience. The set list was amazing. The crowd erupting when Chain was performed. [Air Gear's Opening theme.] The chants of “Back-On” Rained through the main-stage for minutes after Back-on’s exit. The call for an encore was apparent. Back on further delivered on its already top performance. What I like about this performance is that you can see the joy on the band members faces as they were performing. You could also see the joy on the crowd as the music was in full flight. After the Encore the band took a picture with the full crowd. That capped a great night of entertainment.
The Saddest part of Sunday of course was that this day marked the convention's end. However, what I like about Tekko was that the board had a panel called “Ask The Board” for the convention attendees to compliment, as well as to address their complaints and concerns. Not many conventions do this. So this in itself sets Tekko apart from many other anime conventions let alone conventions period.
I recommend Tekko, as this is the first time that I am covering Tekko I can’t speak to its history, however I can speak to its publicized numbers to say that its convention numbers go up each year. Next year’s attendance numbers are expected to soar to “over 9000!!!” I will definitely be back next year.
